Cooking class

A few months ago, I wrote about my experience as a chef's assistant at a farm dinner. Since the spring, I've been assisting Olaiya about once a month or so, at the cooking classes she holds at Delancey. Arriving right from work, I help to get the classroom set up for the evening. I pour the guests wine upon arrival, and assist Olaiya during the evening to help the class go smoothly and to allow her to focus on teaching. There are usually two assistants, and it's really a pretty easy evening. We get to taste of all the food along with the students, and take home any leftovers.

Most of all, there's something invigorating about being able to be part of this teaching world. I love that I know some of the ins and outs of a popular restaurant, and more importantly, to have access to someone who's professionally doing what she loves- cooking. Getting a behinds the scene perspective on cooking classes has definitely made me think about my interest in doing something like this on my own. Maybe, one day..
