Yes, I am one of the fortunate city folk who only had to wait a year to get a pea patch. Yes, it's 200 square feet, and only 4 miles roundtrip from my apartment, and across the street from one of my properties, making for extremely easy summer watering pop-ins. Call me selfish, call me a still-stuck in surburbia girl. It's still not enough space for what I want to do.

I have a good friend who's living in a great house in West Seattle; the house has been in her family for many years. Her aunt and uncle who lived there previously are my city homesteading heros- making soap, gardening, canning, making cheeses, pasta and any other kinds of do it yourself stuff that makes others say 'that sell that at the store, you know'. Since they have moved, there's a large gardening plot just sitting there. What was I going to do, come over all the time and lament the vacant land just sitting there? Nope!
So, I've taken over space in this yard. Another garden plot to tend, food to share with my friend, and everyone wins. This last week I took the afternoon to clean the plot, and planted fingerling potatoes, onions, and some beets and lettuces for her to grab when she wishes. Do I wish my life hadn't changed so dramatically, wished that I still had the enormous garden of mine that was built from the ground up? Of course. But sometimes things don't always look the way we anticipated, or even how we wanted them too. And you just have to make the best of what you do have, and sow the seeds for your future happiness.
